About building permits
Summary
In Charlotte, permits are needed for any new building or when repairs or alterations change a property's use. If the project costs less than $5,000, a permit usually isn't required.
In this section of EveryBlock, we publish building permits throughout the city, so you can see when new ones are issued near you. The permit information, which comes from Mecklenburg County's Land Use and Environmental Services Agency, includes the project's location, the date the permit was issued, project details and estimated cost.
The details explain more about each project — whether it is for commercial or residential use, how many people could live there and whether the permit allows for new construction or alterations. In most cases, the permits involve residential projects.

More about permit requirements
The Mecklenburg County Land Use and Environmental Services Agency is in charge of building code enforcement, enforcing North Carolina building codes.
Projects fit into one of more than two dozen types under U.S. Department of Commerce code. The categories range from single-family houses to outdoor sporting arenas. Projects that cost less than $5,000 normally don't require permits — but there are exceptions to that guideline.
Here's a full list of things to add up to figure out a project's cost. More information is available at Mecklenburg County's online permit site.
