Neighbors Complain About Violence In Southeast Charlotte Apartments

Thursday, August 14, 2008 – updated: 11:08 pm EDT August 14, 2008

Neighbors in one East Charlotte community are demanding action for Charlotte's City Council because they want to see a nearby apartment complex cleaned up.

John Autry lives in Coventry Woods, and only a fence separates his community from Idlewild Apartments, a complex off Idlewild Road that's seen more than its share of violence -- most recently a homicide Monday night. "We get painted with the same brush," said Autry.

A look at crime numbers at the complex from August 2007 to Aug. 13, 2008 paints a grim picture: According to Charlotte Mecklenburg police, there have been 206 calls for service including 63 residential burglaries, 11 aggravated assaults with a weapon and two rapes.

"We want to see some action taken to clean up Idlewild Apartments," said Autry. "It's a bad situation; it's a terrible situation over there. People are in jeporady living there."

Anthony Foxx, city councilman at large, agrees but told Eyewitness News it will take including the troubled complex in the plan to revitalize the east side to see any real change.

"We've got to coordinate the things we're trying to do with Eastland Mall, the things we're trying to do in the community as it relates to reducing crime, the way in which the housing authority and city interrelate," he said.

Foxx also said the city now requires all landlords to register so they know who owns what property. But without the cooperation from Idlewild Apartments' out-of-state owner, he wondered just how much the city leaders can do.

"It's all gonna come back to working with that landlord and if the landlord, doesn't work with us, the question then is what happens," Foxx said. "And we haven't figured that out yet, but we're gonna have to do something."
