About police calls for service

Summary

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department publishes calls for service made to 911 dispatchers. In this section of EveryBlock, we take those records and map any that were placed from within Charlotte city limits. That means you can find out when the police were called from a location near you.

The police records include the date and address of the call, the police division that responded, what was reported and what, if anything, was found when police arrived at the scene. Calls can stem from such things as reports of prowlers, suspicious vehicles or the sounding of commercial alarms.

Note that the department says it screens 911 calls before publishing to maintain victims' privacy rights.

The data comes from the calls for service page maintained by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The police department constantly updates the information, and we at EveryBlock retrieve new data six times a day.

How do the police in Charlotte release information?

The CMPD does not publish a full list of crime reports online. Instead, it publishes a service call log and a list of significant events.

CMPD allows online access to crime reports but requires complaint numbers and the last name of a victim or property owner. Crime reports typically are available 24 to 48 hours after a crime occurs.

Each record shows the division that responded to the call. The police department is divided into 13 patrol divisions. The divisions vary in size both geographically and by the number of officers assigned to each division.

Other units will sometimes appear as the responding division, including Animal Control and the Serious Crimes Task Force.
