17 Independence

The Independence Division comprises nearly 20.5 square miles of Mecklenburg County with a strong commercial presence as well as residential areas. Independence is located in the southeastern portion of Mecklenburg County. There are 73 officers, eight sergeants, one investigative technician and a captain assigned to the division.

• 3200 block of Aspendale Lane Breaking and entering residential-unoccupied

  Neighbor called and advised that 2-3 suspects were attempting entry into a vacant home. When officers arrived, all three suspects were located and apprehended. NFI

• 5900 block of Monroe Rd. Robbery from person—armed

  The victim reported being robbed at gunpoint by two black male suspects. The first suspect was about 18 years old, 5'7", skinny, wearing a black hat, black shirt, and black pants. The second suspect was about 16 years old, 5'4", skinny, also wearing a black hat, black shirt, and black pants. The suspects fled on foot. No injuries.

• 1700 block of Back Bay Court Stolen vehicle

  Stolen vehicle located and recovered in the area. Subject who has outstanding warrants for stolen vehicle was arrested. He was also wanted on multiple charges out of Iredell County. Iredell County is coming to get the suspect on their charges.

• 6400 block of Monroe Rd Robbery from person—armed

  Two victims were walking at the above address when they were approached by 2 black males suspects armed with handguns. The suspects robbed the victims of money and personal items. Both victims claimed to be struck in the head, but there were no signs of injury.

• 2300 block of Cross Point Circle Apt 33 Robbery from person—armed

  Three B/Ms forced their way into victim's apt. and one was armed with a handgun. Suspects took electronic equipment. Victim's roomate was not present but may be acquainted with suspects.

  Assisted CFD with apartment fire. No injuries. Arson Detectives were requested to the scene.

• 5700 block of Wyalong Drive Robbery from person—strong arm

  Female victim was walking out of Harris Teeter with her husband when a young B/M suspect came up, pushed her, took her purse and fled on foot. Her husband chased the suspect on foot. K-9 responded and tracked and located the victim's purse and belongings and a 14 yr old suspect was located a short time later as well. No injuries. Robbery Detectives interviewed the suspect.

• 7000 block of Wallace Rd. Robbery from person—armed

  The victim reported that they were robbed at gunpoint by a black male suspect in a black hooded sweatshirt. The suspect fled on foot. No injuries.

• 6500 block of Idlewild Road Assist medic

  A 7 month old child was transported to Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries. It is unknown at this time how the child received the injuries. Youth Crime Detectives and DSS are investigating.

• 6000 block of E. Independence Blvd. Robbery from business—armed

  2 B/M suspects entered the Wendy's and took money from the register at gunpoint and then fled the restaurant on foot across Independence Blvd. K-9 and the CMPD Helicopter responded to the scene to assist. Suspects are both approx 5'9", 160, 1 is wearing a red hoodie and the other a black hoodie, both were wearing masks during the robbery. No shots fired, no injuries.

• 7900 block of Woodway Oak Circle Robbery from person—armed

  The victim stated that he was in his apartment when two BM suspects broke in and robbed him at gunpoint. The suspects fled the immediate area on foot.

  The victim was walking along Idlewild Road when he was approached by an armed B/M suspect who demanded the victims money. The suspect then fled the area on foot.

• 6600 block of Idlewild Road Robbery from person—armed

  H/M victim arrived home and was getting out of his car in front of his apartment when he was approached by 2 B/Ms, 1 of which was armed with a handgun. The suspects took money and cell phone from the victim and then the armed suspect struck the victim in head with the gun. The victim sustained minor injury and refused medic. The suspects fled on foot. Suspects: #1: B/M, 6 ft tall, dark hoodie, dark jeans, armed with hand gun. #2: 5¿3", small build with blk t-shirt and dark pants.

  42 yr old female found deceased in a locked apartment. She has no apparent signs of trauma and friends do not know medical history. Homicide and CSS responded to assist with the investigation per protocol.

• 5900 block of Monroe Road Assault with a deadly weapon-with injury

  Male victim went to Presbyterian Matthews with an stabbing injury to his arm. CMPD was called to the hospital to take the report. NLT injury.

  Police vehicle involved in an accident at this address. Another vehicle struck the police vehicle. No injuries.

  The victim shot themself in the leg with a gun causing a NLT injury.

• 9700 block of Idlewild Rd. Robbery from person—armed

  Victims were robbed of their vehicle at the above address by three BM suspects. THe victims were physically assaulted and threatened with a stun gun. No serious injuries. The suspects are known to the victims. The vehicle is a 1996 Chevy Caprice, Teal blue, with 22" rims.

• 6200 block of Idlewild Rd. Robbery from person—armed

  The victim was using the ATM. He had trouble with his transaction and stepped back to allow the next person to use the machine. The suspect then took the victims card and money from the machine. When confronted, he indicated a gun, and threatened the victim which classified this incident as a robbery.

• 6800 block of Farmingdale Drive Robbery from person—armed

  Male victim was walking and talking on his cell phone when he was approached by the 2 suspects, 1 of which was armed with a knife. The suspects took money and a cell phone from the victim and then fled in a cream colored Infiniti. Suspects were both B/Ms wearing dark clothing with dark hoodies. 1 was 5'7", and the other was 6'2". Victim was not injured.

  Unknown suspect(s) fired multiple gunshots in the area, striking an occupied apartment. No injuries

• E. Independence Blvd. & Sharon Amity Road Accident-fatality

  2 vehicle accident. One vehicle made an illegal left turn from Independence outbound onto Sharon Amity. The passenger in that vehicle died as a result of the accident. A 4 yr old child in that vehicle also sustained what is believed to be NLT but serious injuries. The driver has NLT injuries. The other vehicle had a female and two children in it and all sustained NLT injuries. HITS is investigating this accident.

• 5800 block of Cedars East Court Robbery from person—armed

  The victim was shot once in each thigh by the suspects during a robbery attempt. The suspects are described as 2 BMs who fled the area in a light brown four door Honda. The victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

  The victim advised that as he pulled into his driveway, 2 black male suspects approached him armed with handguns. They demanded his money and then fled with his wallet and other personal items. There was no direction of travel and only minor injury.

  The victim reported being robbed at gunpoint by two black males in black clothing with their faces concealed with masks. The suspects fled on foot. No injuries.

  The victim in this case was intoxicated and was soliciting for money in the median at Independence and Idlewild. He advised that he was robbed of cash at gunpoint by a B/M suspect who fled the area on foot.

  The three victims were operating a tow truck when approached by two black males suspects. The suspects attempted to rob the victims, but they resisted, and the suspect fled the scene in a small silver vehicle.

  Male subject deceased of an apparent self inflicted gun shot wound. Homicide, CD-CP, Mobile Crisis responded to the scene to assist with this investigation.

  The victim reported that they were shot in the face and back by a known suspect following an argument. The suspect fled on foot. The victim was transported to CMC by MEDIC for treatment of a NLT injury. ADW detectives responded.
